4 Fun Facts About Color

Google announced back in December that as of March 1, google friend connect would no longer be allowed on other blogs. So if you have been a trusted follower of my blog you will only see updated posts via blogger. So in an attempt to keep my readers up to date, I will make every effort to post the AB HOME articles here so you see them.
4 Fun Facts About Color
Color is the dominant king when it comes to decorating because it is the single most valuable tool in a home. Think about it, if you leave your walls light and bright bright color accents can bring in excitement. If you paint your walls dark it can quickly add drama and mystique. Over the years my team and I have painted countless hours away in the various offices we have been in. So much so that I think it is safe to say that some of our office walls may be a half inch thicker than they were when we moved it! But I love paint and I love how it can instantly transform a room.
Color is not only exciting but it is a mischievous decorating tool that can instantly transform your space.

1) Color contrast

love the bold paint color.

Play up an architectural detail, or create a pop with that new bold chair by painting the wall a contrasting color. Colors that contrast boldly with their background make details stand out and draw attention to them. These can become the instant “wows” in a home!

2) Similar colors conceal

pale paint and open shelves

Painting everything the same color can conceal imperfections and make a room look seamless. It can also help calm the room down if there is a lot going on. Another trick, paint everything the same color, including trim to create beautiful shadowing details, like the photo above.

Brown~The always "it" color

I have been in the design business for over twelve years. I have seen fads come and go, and trends thrown to the wayside for the next up and coming thing. One thing that never seems to lose it's luster is the color ~ brown. I know the new, shiny, fun color for the year has been grey. BUT, like green, brown never goes away. The grey undertone may become more prevalent this fall, but brown is here to stay. People just gravitate to it. Brown is organic, rich, and earthy. It goes with every thing and look in any book from the 1950's to now and what do you see over and over? Brown. It is a timeless color, and one of my all time favorite browns is by Benjamin Moore,

It's oh so bittersweet.....
Benjamin Moore Bittersweet Chocolate 2441

Curious, I contacted my friend and color expert, Kelly Berg over at Arte Styling. I wanted her take on the color, and why she thought it had such sticking power:
"I think browns, in general, have staying power because they are grounding. Humans strongly associate browns with the earth, so using brown in our spaces can help to create a very solid, stable environment."

"Deep, rich browns remind us of chocolate and coffee...while pale golden imbued browns can look like a sandy beach. Deep “espresso” and “chocolate” browns have had particular staying power in the past 10 years, especially in furniture-wood finishes. West Elm has nearly built an entire brand with these chocolate-y hues!"

  West Elm

"While beiges have their time and place,  I feel that most of them lose their grounding quality when they are lightened, making them kind of wimpy, indecisive hues."
Louis Di Calla

"Deep browns are like a softer alternative to black. They allow us to get the depth and drama of black but with a softer, warmer edge. Too much brown - wood or other materials - can be heavy. In an interior space we have to have balance. In nature, browns are balanced with many other colors. Sometimes a color novice will overuse brown and mess up that balance, making the space feel off. We've all been in that house with wood-paneled walls, and dark brown shag carpet, better known as "the 1970's." "None of us need to revisit that trend." ~Kelly Berg, Color Expert

I agree with Kelly and her statement, "...it can help to create a very solid, stable environment."  This is very true, especially in a time when society needs stability more than ever!

"Brown has a quality that no other color can provide. It is rich, and can be associated with many things, but most importantly it connects us to nature. Ever wonder why brown and green together are so popular? Think about it..." ~Amanda Burdge, Interior Designer, Nashville Home and Garden, 2008.

Thomas Lavin

I agreed with Kelly one hundred percent, but I wanted to dig deeper. So I contacted Lori Sawaya over at Color Budz to get her take on this theory of ours on Brown.
According to Lori:

"Much of brown's appeal lies in it's ability to simultaneously reinforce notions of formational possibilities and create well-rooted security.  It's that unusual juxtaposition of feeling that attracts many to the color brown."
"When I think about using brown interior or exterior my mind immediately reaches for its elegantly purposeful side.  Done right, brown is well-edited and organically edgy." ~Lori Sawaya, Color Expert

Brown says stability and reliability. It is the color of our earth and all things organic. It gives us a sense of orderliness and connection. It is no mistake that companies like UPS has Pullman Brown as it's iconic trademark color. And what do you think of when you hear Hershey's chocolate? Not only does this word signify a rich brown color, but it also entices our taste buds.

Adrienne Neff

Paint is a dynamic creature. It can be energetic, active, serene, bold, and the list of adjectives goes on. What is unique about brown is it's ability to be all things. Brown allows us to be bold and dramatic, but due to it's suggestion to nature, it is soft, easy and luxurious.

God has a brown voice, as soft as brown sugar and full of beer." ~ Anne Sexton

What does brown signify to you?

What is your favorite Brown Color?

How to take charge of your laundry room
with these 7 easy steps

Laundry rooms are often the last source for inspiration, so few homeowner's put effort into making them special. But talk to any mom with a house full of kids, pets, and various other "life" happenings, and they will tell you that they do some serious laundry!

When designing a laundry room it is important to get the necessities in, and make it functional, but why not make it inspirational, and inviting? If you walked into the room above to do your laundry, wouldn't you be a little more excited to spend your day there?

Last Friday I met with some homeowners who have two kids. They do two to three loads of laundry a day, and share their laundry room with the powder room. It is a very small space. The toilet and door touch, and in order to get to the bi-fold doors, that house the washer and dryer, they have to walk around the door and shut themselves into the room....amidst a pile of clothes consuming the floor like Jabba the hut, just to do laundry. How do you think they feel about doing laundry? {Not real good.} It is a hassle, hard to move, and a challenge not to trip and fall with so much chaos. This is not a functional and happy place. But I see this ALL the time. And few people want to invest in a place that no one sees, and does such hard, and dirty labor. Remember that post I just did on a glamourous life? Well it is the simply luxuries, like a fabulous laundry room, that make life glamourous.
So what can you do to make your space better?

1) Plan your room carefully. Think about how you use the space. How much room do you have? Can you expand the space? How can you make the space better?

2) Give yourself as much storage as the space will allow, no matter how unique your storage needs are or little the space is. You can never have too much! Think about how you will use the space and how you can make it better

3)  Choose lighting that is appropriate for the room. Don't use harsh lighting if you don't need it and use fixtures that make a beautiful room. Layer your light, and put everything on dimmers. Laundry is not rocket science. If it has been a long day, you just need a little light to start the load, and a little light to fold. ( I went to Arizona a few years ago, chandeliers and sconces were in laundry rooms everywhere and I thought it made a beautiful and unexpected surprise!)

4) Add electronics to your space like a TV, or a place to sit and do work on the computer. These distractions can double as entertainment, and make doing laundry a little more fun. Especially if you can catch up on that guilty pleasure that you swear you don't watch!

5) ALWAYS put in the biggest utility sink you can. It needs to be as deep as possible, and prepared to handle war!

6) If possible add a built-in ironing board or have a place to put one. Few people iron anymore, but it nice to have one when you need it, and they don't take up a lot of room.

7) Combine the room with something you love. Don't let the extra room go to waste. It can double as a craft room, office, homework station, reading spot, TV room, etc. A client came to me with this photo above three years ago. They were building a custom house and she loved scrap booking so we duplicated this room down to the tile. Because the room is so colorful and fun she LOVED being in here! Can you blame her?

What are some things you could add to your laundry room? How can you make it better?
And remember there are no rules when doing laundry! Unless you do it in public....

6 people everyone needs to know for colour

Today in my inbox I received this great article from Sherwin Williams about color. The article, Material color: When color takes the driver's seat, discusses how integral color is to the design process. "Color is always an important part of any design process, but it's important to be judicious- sometimes subtly or boldly." I cannot agree more.

When designing a home, I always start with color. Questions I will ask-What is the story that the client is trying to achieve? What is the feeling they want to accomplish? Does the architecture speak to me in unusual ways? But most importantly-What is the client's lifestyle, and what inspires them. A great example of inspiration is a post, The little things by Anne from Annechovie. She shows what pieces speak to her and how they make her happy. Another post on eye candy sure to inspire is Sassy, by Deliciously Organized. I also look to beautiful photos to jump start my creative color ideas:

Right off the bat, the article states: "... color inspiration can be drawn from something as inconsequential as a pebble to something as forceful as a mountain range." -Amy Kim

In my opinion everything in an interior is an integral part of making the recipe work, but without the right color, the space lacks character and ambiance. ~Amanda Burdge

Sofa envy by Nashville Interior Designer, Amanda Burdge

David Demattei and Patrick Wade

These days the proverbial beige sofa has really lost my interest. Now, I know that it is a tried and true favorite, and a "go-to"must have for any home, but after ten years of solid beige and brown sofas, I'm ready to move on. As I was doing research for a new client, (who LOVES color) I decided a bold sofa was just what we needed. Why on earth have I not been doing this? Here were a few of my favs!

John Willey

Ken Fulk

Jeffrey Bihuber

Jonathan Adler

David Lawrence

Really are these not gorgeous? How great would it be to walk into your room and see a vibrant orange sofa? Or a bright acid green one? Just the thought of it brings a smile to my face. I think it's high time to buy a new sofa and add some flavor to the house, who's with me?!

Amanda Burdge suggests The best floor colors

I have never worked on a home that allowed me the freedom (and creativity) to paint a floor. Primarily because the male counterpart in the relationship appreciates natural wood, stained in all it's glory. Eh, what do men know anyways?
I was surfing the internet this morning and came across an article on painted floors. I really think it gives a room that graphic punch of unexpected color. I also think it can become art, and create a focal attention grabber. See for yourself.
